Hip pain during pregnancy is a common complaint, and it has various causes. Some women have pelvic girdle pain (PGP), a condition that may have been present before pregnancy and tends to worsen from the first trimester. Pelvic Girdle pain is a common condition unfortunately. Pelvic girdle pain is defined as pain anywhere between the top of your pelvic bone down to the bottom of your buttocks.

Other pregnant women simply get hip pain as their belly grows and other body parts start shifting around to make room for the baby.

During pregnancy, your pelvis widens and the hormone relaxin increases, which causes ligaments to loosen to accommodate for childbirth. This means that the stability of your pelvis is at risk and exercises should be performed to stabilize. When your body senses that things are not stable, your muscles start to tighten to compensate and protect itself and this can cause hip pain when pregnant.

Whatever the cause, one thing is certain: Pregnant women can experience intense hip pain. And while there’s no one cure for some of these conditions, there are things you can do to minimize hip pain when pregnant.

Hip pain can also be caused by sleeping on your side and pressure from your belly. I very much recommend you sleep with a pillow between your legs to keep your hips and pelvis in good alignment.
