Back pain during pregnancy is quite common. It can be a sharp or dull ache or even a stabbing or burning sensation. Some women experience it in their lower back, while others feel it in the middle of the spine, or even all the way up to the neck and shoulders.

What Causes Pregnancy Back Pain?

Backache is more common during the second and third trimester, because your ever growing belly puts strain on your body, especially on your spine. Your hormones also relax your ligaments, which support your joints and spine, making it easier for you to injure yourself.

Pregnancy is a beautiful time in life, but it can also be extremely painful. More than half of pregnant women experience some form of back pain during pregnancy, and along with it comes less sleep, less energy, and less time to focus on what you need to do.

Your body undergoes a variety of changes when you’re pregnant. This includes major hormonal shifts that loosen your joints and ligaments, as well as weight gain that increases pressure on your back and legs. This often results in various forms of lower back pain, like sciatica and nerve pain. Some women even experience rib cage discomfort or mid back pain during pregnancy which can be just as uncomfortable.

Pregnancy places a great deal of stress on your body, especially the spine and hips. There are several different types of pregnancy back pain as your belly grows bigger and baby gets heavier. You may experience any of the following: Lower Back Pain, Sacroiliac Joint Pain, Hip Pain and Pubic Symphysis Pain.

Most cases of pregnancy back pain are temporary and go away within a few months after giving birth or often straight away. However, doing nothing about them can lead to severe consequences down the road — problems like permanent nerve damage or chronic low back pain that never goes away. So if you’re feeling any discomfort at all, make sure to consult your health care professional.

The Cat Stretch – This stretch helps to relax your lower back muscles and can be done by any pregnant woman with low-risk pregnancy.

Get down on your hands and knees on a soft surface. Make sure you keep your neck in line with your spine – don’t let it sag down or arch up too much.

Breathe out as you gently arch your spine upwards toward the ceiling, rounding out your back as far as comfortable. Breathe in as you gently return to the starting position, making sure not to sag or flatten the curve of your spine too much while doing so. Repeat 5 times.

Hip Stretch – Leg Crosses Over

This is an excellent exercise to help get rid of lower back pain fast. To begin this exercise, sit flat on your bum and make sure your feet are flat against the ground. Then bring your right leg across your body, resting your ankle above your knee, until you feel a stretch in your hip. Hold this position for 5-10 seconds and then repeat on the other side. This exercise should be done 3 times on each side and repeated every couple hours throughout the day
